The Sure Thing [1985]

"Three thousand miles just to get laid. I really respect that." John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga star in this lighthearted, humorous road movie—a 1980’s version of It Happened One Night directed by none other than “Meathead” himself, Rob Reiner. “Lance” (Anthony Edwards) encourages his best friend Walter “Gib” Gibson (Cusack) to travel across the country from his New England college to California during Christmas break in order to hook up with a “sure thing” (a stunning Nicollette Sheridan, in her film debut). Along the way, the laid-back Cusack teaches strait-laced “Alison” (Zuniga)—she’s on her way to visit her equally conservative and extremely boring boyfriend “Jason” (Boyd Gaines)—how to "shotgun" a beer and the two begin to fall for each other. Gib encourages her to loosen up a bit with lines like “What the hell’s wrong with being stupid once in awhile? Does everything you do always have to be sensible? Haven’t you ever thrown waterballoons off a roof? When you were a little kid didn’t you ever sprinkle soap flakes on the living room floor ‘cause you wanted to make it snow in July? Didn’t you ever get really shitfaced and maybe make a complete fool of yourself and still have an excellent time?” Tim Robbins has a brief role as a total geek named "Gary Cooper" who sings showtunes! In addition, Viveca Lindfors turns in a great performance as the unconventional “Professor Taub,” who tells Alison that she needs to liven up her writing style: “Life is the ultimate experience and you have to live it to write about it.” Useless Trivia: Look for a poster of This Is Spinal Tap (also directed by Reiner) on the wall of Gib’s dorm room.

Nicolette Sheridan was sure a hottie back then! I also liked the horny old professor chick and when she reads the paper to the class: "Thoughts raced through his mind. Did she really want him? What had he done to deserve this bounty? Does God exist? Who invented liquid soap and why?" A true teen classic from the moldie goldie 80s!
